Speed Limit for Vans

Hundreds of van drivers are caught out by not knowing the speed limit for vans.  Ignorance of the rules is no defence in law.  It’s also no defence to drive in a queue of other traffic, some of which will also be breaking the law.  Here is a summary of the rules.

The National Speed Limit for Vans

The speed limit for vans on normal A roads is 50 mph.  Contrast this with cars, which can drive at 60 mph on A roads. Many drivers think it is 60 mph.  On Dual Carriageways, the speed limit for vans is 60 mph where cars can drive at 70 mph.  So, where you see the National Speed Limit Signs, the speed limit is 60 mph.

The speed limit is 70 mph.  This is the same for cars.

The Speed limit for Vans in town

Follow the normal rules for cars. In built up areas, where there are signs or where there’s a system of normal street lights, the speed limit is 30 mph.  This is sometimes reduced to 20 mph. Simply follow the local signage.
